On February 27, 2024, the Nature Restoration Law, Europe’s first law imposing binding targets for ecosystem restoration, was passed. By 2030, member states must restore at least 20 percent of degraded lands and seas, with more ambitious targets set for 2040 and 2050. The law aims to strengthen habitats such as forests, wetlands and rivers, improve pollinators, increase urban biodiversity and reduce climate impacts. Each euro invested in restoration can generate an economic return of 8 to 38 euros.
