Montecristo: biodiversity is studied from above

To monitor the rupicolous vegetation ofMontecristo Island, botanical researchers from the Universities of Florence and Siena, in collaboration with the Carabinieri for Biodiversity in Follonica, are using drones and GPS. The study, which aims to contribute to the conservation of the island’s biodiversity and the understanding of Tuscan habitats worthy of protection, focuses on rare and endemic plant species such as Saxifraga montis-christi. The technology used allowed precise mapping of the most impervious areas, facilitating the ecological and conservation status analysis of the habitat under study.
