Spot the Monk is called the project created to monitor the presence of the monk seal in the Mediterranean Sea that, through environmental DNA(eDNA) analysis, detects the presence of the monk seal from simple seawater samples. The process uses a synthetic DNA strand that binds only to the monk seal’s DNA: if the latter is contained in the collected water sample, the synthetic strand binds to it, signaling the animal’s presence. Implemented through a network of collaborators and partner associations across the Mediterranean, the project has an eponymous website with an interactive map.
