Please note that the Biodiversity Gateway website does not collect personal data, only aggregate data for statistical purposes and to improve user experience.

4. Type of data collected
The Biodiversity Gateway website collects only aggregate data, which does not allow individual identification of users. The personal data collected relates to browsing data normally received by the HTTP service (such as IP address, operating system, browsing data such as pages visited, time spent on the site, geographic origin or language data, etc.).
The data are received and stored through the so-called “logfiles” of the service.
5. Purpose of data processing
The data are processed by the Data Controller in the performance of its tasks of public interest or otherwise related to the exercise of its public powers, including the purposes of scientific research and analysis for statistical, educational, administrative purposes, in accordance with Article 6, paragraph 1, letter e) also, in order to provide and improve the web services offered.
The aggregate data collected are used for:

6. Cookie
The Biodiversity Gateway website uses cookies to collect aggregate information about users’ browsing. Cookies are small text files that are stored on the User’s device to improve the browsing experience and collect anonymous data about Users’ preferences.These technologies, referred to as “Tracking Tools,” allow the Data Controller to collect and store information, or use resources (e.g. by running a script) on the User’s device when the User interacts with the Biodiversity Gateway website.
The Biodiversity Gateway website uses tracking tools operated directly by the Data Controller and Processor, and does not use tracking tools that enable services provided by third parties.
The main types of cookies used by our site are:
- Session cookies: temporary and necessary for the operation of the site;
- Analytical cookies: used to collect aggregate information about website usage, such as Matomo Analytics;
- Functionality cookies: used to store user preferences (language, settings, etc.) while browsing.
